US Soldiers Missing in Lithuania Amid NATO Confusion
A massive search is underway for four US soldiers missing in Lithuania after disappearing during a military training exercise near the Belarus border.
The US Army confirmed that the soldiers, part of the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division, were conducting tactical drills when they vanished. Their M88 Hercules armored recovery vehicle was later discovered submerged in water within the training area.
US soldiers missing in Lithuania during a NATO training Backtracks on Soldier Deaths
NATO faced backlash after Secretary General Mark Rutte mistakenly suggested that the missing soldiers had died. The alliance quickly retracted the statement, with acting NATO spokesperson Allison Hart clarifying, “He was referring to emerging news reports & was not confirming the fate of the missing, which is still unknown.”
Meanwhile, the Lithuanian Army stated it has “no evidence or information confirming the deaths” and assured that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Difficult Rescue Efforts Underway
The recovery mission is proving challenging due to swampy terrain, requiring heavier equipment and additional resources. Lithuanian Chief of Defense Raimundas Vaikšnoras emphasized the complexity of the operation, noting that all necessary machinery is being deployed to aid the search.
As tensions rise between NATO and Russia, the disappearance of US soldiers in Lithuania has further heightened concerns about security in the region.
