‘Hell No’: Proposals to Privatize the U.S. Postal Service Spark Nationwide Protests

Introduction:

Proposals to privatize the U.S. Postal Service have ignited massive outrage across the country as thousands of postal workers and their supporters held nationwide rallies. The protests erupted in response to controversial plans involving potential privatization, job cuts, and a shocking USPS agreement with Elon Musk’s team to eliminate 10,000 jobs in the coming weeks.

The U.S. Postal Service, a 250-year-old institution employing over 635,000 Americans, now faces mounting pressure as proposals to privatize the U.S. Postal Service gain traction. Over the weekend, protests spanned from Arizona and Texas to New York City and Washington, D.C., with trending hashtags like #FightLikeHell and #HellNo.

President Donald Trump’s suggestion to merge USPS with the Commerce Department, combined with Elon Musk’s push for privatization, has fueled nationwide anger. Adding to the fire, USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy revealed a recent agreement with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aimed at cutting 10,000 jobs, sparking fears of deeper privatization moves.

Union Leaders and Lawmakers Condemn Postal Service Privatization Plans

National Association of Letter Carriers President Brian Renfroe, speaking passionately at the Los Angeles rally, slammed proposals to privatize the U.S. Postal Service and eliminate jobs. “We had an election, and no one voted to dismantle the Postal Service,” he declared.

American Postal Workers Union President Mark Dimondstein echoed the outrage in Washington, warning, “Our postal services are truly in danger. This is just the beginning of a relentless fight to protect it.”

Outraged lawmakers, including California Representatives Maxine Waters, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, and Jimmy Gomez, stood in solidarity with postal workers. Rep. Gerald Connolly accused DeJoy of letting DOGE infiltrate USPS with an agenda to “undermine it, privatize it, and profit off Americans’ loss.”

Postmaster General’s Agreement with Musk’s DOGE Sparks Political Firestorm

DeJoy’s recent letter to Congress detailed a plan to address USPS’s projected $80 billion loss over the next decade. However, the job-slashing deal with Musk’s DOGE intensified fears surrounding proposals to privatize the U.S. Postal Service.

Connolly expressed grave concerns, saying, “The American people deserve transparency about this agreement, DOGE’s role, and how these actions threaten essential services and sensitive taxpayer data.”
