Family Escapes Safely During Pennsylvania Governor’s Residence Fire
A Pennsylvania governor’s residence fire broke out early Sunday morning while Governor Josh Shapiro, his wife, children, guests, and two dogs were asleep inside. Authorities say the fire was intentionally set, and a suspect has been charged with multiple serious crimes, including attempted murder and terrorism.
The suspect, Cody Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, allegedly broke into the residence just hours after the Shapiro family hosted a Passover Seder. No injuries were reported, but the historic mansion suffered significant damage.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Balmer scaled the mansion’s fence, shattered windows with a hammer, and used homemade incendiary devices to ignite the fire. He fled after kicking down a dining room door, narrowly avoiding detection by troopers on the property.
Authorities later received a tip from Balmer’s ex-partner, who said he confessed to starting the Pennsylvania governor’s residence fire. Balmer later turned himself in and admitted to harboring hatred toward Gov. Shapiro. He told police he used gasoline from a lawn mower and beer bottles to make Molotov cocktails.

The fire erupted around 2 a.m. and was extinguished by the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire. State police are conducting a security review to prevent future breaches.

In a Sunday press conference, an emotional Shapiro condemned the growing wave of political violence. He cited similar threats and attacks against elected officials nationwide, including the 2023 plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor.
“If this individual was trying to scare us, he failed,” Shapiro said. “No one will deter me or my family from practicing our faith or serving this Commonwealth.”
The FBI is now assisting in the ongoing investigation, and Balmer may face federal charges.
