FSU Active Shooter: Florida State University on Lockdown After Reports of Gunfire
FSU Active Shooter Alert Locks Down Campus
Florida State University’s Tallahassee campus was thrust into lockdown after reports of an FSU active shooter surfaced Thursday morning.
The university sent an emergency text message warning students and staff to shelter immediately, stay away from doors and windows, and brace for possible additional actions.
Sirens wailed across downtown Tallahassee as law enforcement agencies, including police, state troopers, and fire departments, descended on the scene. Helicopters circled the area as officers methodically evacuated buildings like Bellamy Hall, floor by floor.
Eyewitnesses described hearing gunshots, with some suggesting the sounds resembled semi-automatic fire coming from inside one of the buildings.
Several Hospitalized Following FSU Active Shooter Incident
Local station WCTV reported that four people have been hospitalized following the FSU active shooter incident.
Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare (TMH) confirmed it was receiving patients linked to the unfolding crisis. While exact conditions were not immediately available, TMH assured the community that medical teams were fully engaged and working closely with emergency services.
In a public statement, TMH emphasized the importance of patience and respect for the privacy of those impacted.
Public Schools in Leon County Also Locked Down
As the FSU active shooter situation developed, Leon County public schools entered lockdown at around 12:15 p.m., according to spokesperson Chris Petley.
Authorities moved quickly to secure campuses across the country as a precaution while police activity continued at Florida State University.
Meanwhile, a Leon County Sheriff’s Office helicopter provided aerial surveillance over FSU, monitoring movements and assisting ground forces. Multiple ambulances were seen traveling between the university and Tallahassee Memorial’s trauma center.
Initial FSU Alerts and Ongoing Investigation
Florida State University’s initial shelter-in-place alert warned of an FSU active shooter near the Student Union:
“Police are either on site or en route. Remain sheltered, avoid doors and windows, and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”
Calls to the FSU Police Department were reportedly met with busy lines, as officials were overwhelmed handling the situation. The Tallahassee Police Department directed all inquiries back to FSUPD.
